What is SAMe?

SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine) is naturally made by cells throughout the body and is formed from the amino acid methionine and a cellular energy substance called ATP. It is also found naturally in food sources like meat and sunflower seeds.

SAMe is an antioxidant and has detoxifying properties. It is able to reduce liver problems such as increased liver enzyme levels on blood tests that show some degree of liver inflammation (hepatitis) or even the severe liver problem cirrhosis. It has been shown in research to increase glutathione levels in the liver of cats and dogs. Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant which help0s maintain and protect liver function. It is mainly used as a liver support supplement in veterinary practice today, although it has also been used for dogs with osteoarthritis.

Why recommend administration of SAMe to my pet?

SAMe is widely prescribed for the same purposes in animals as it is in people. That is, SAMe is used for the treatment of canine cognitive disorders, suspected depression, osteoarthritis, and especially hepatitis. It is appropriate for all species, since it is present in all mammals. It is probably most commonly used in dogs given their susceptibility to liver and musculoskeletal disorders.

How safe is SAMe?

Side effects of SAMe are rare, and limited to mild nausea and gastrointestinal irritation at high doses. SAMe should also be used with caution in hyperexcitable animals, since it may heighten their mood further.
