Urticaria - Hives

urticariaMy Dachshund had his second vaccination and suddenly developed multiple wheals and swellings all over his face. I was told this was urticaria. What is this?

Urticaria is an allergic phenomenon. Food, drugs, vaccines and particularly insect bites and stings can be responsible.

Is the condition dangerous?

Urticaria, or hives, as the result of insect stings, particularly bees, can result in dramatic swelling around the face and lips and if the bee has been eaten, and the swelling is affecting the throat, it can be serious.

Can it be treated?

Yes. Antihistamines and corticosteroids by injection usually bring about a dramatic response.
